Saint Maura Castle – The Historic Landmark at the Entrance of Lefkada

Discover Saint Maura Castle

Saint Maura Castle is one of the most important landmarks in Lefkada, welcoming visitors at the very entrance of the island, next to the floating bridge that connects Lefkada with mainland Greece. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Venetian fortresses in Greece, with a history dating back to the early 14th century.

The History of Saint Maura Castle

The castle was founded around 1300 by the Franks in a highly strategic location, allowing control over the Adriatic Sea routes, the entrance to the Ambracian Gulf, and access to Lefkada. Throughout the centuries, it underwent extensive modifications under Venetian, Ottoman, and later British rule, each leaving its mark on the fortress and shaping the structure visitors admire today.

Architecture and Military Significance

Covering an area of approximately 50,000 square metres, the Venetian Castle of Saint Maura is an outstanding example of medieval military architecture. Its irregular heptagonal layout features eight bastions of circular, semi-circular, and trapezoidal design, while its defensive walls extend for nearly 900 metres.

Constructed from local limestone, the fortification walls rise to heights of up to 12 metres, with sections reaching an impressive thickness of 20 metres, highlighting the castle’s crucial defensive role throughout history.

The fortress was originally protected by a water-filled moat and strong outer defensive walls. Access to its two main gates was initially provided by wooden drawbridges, which were replaced with stone bridges during the British administration.

What to See

As you explore Saint Maura Castle, you will discover the remains of Venetian warehouses, military barracks, Ottoman buildings, and the historic Church of Saint Maura, from which the castle takes its name.

The visit concludes with breathtaking panoramic views over the Lefkada Lagoon, the Ionian Sea, and the opposite coast of Acarnania, offering one of the island’s most spectacular landscapes and countless opportunities for photography.
